Montblanc Watches
In 1997, Montblanc revelaed its first watch collection, with the intention of the watch collection reflecing the most popular product, the Meisterstück fountain pen. The production site for Montblanc's watches was an old villa in Le Locle, which was also built in 1906, the same year that Montblanc had been founded.
As the demand for Montblanc's watches expanded, it was clear that they needed to expand the workspace. In 2003, they completed the expansion of the workshop by building a whole extra floor underneath the original villa, which was built with large glass windows to reflect an atrium. Later that year Montblanc released the Timewalker collection, which was catered to a younger audience. The Timewalker had a more sporty and urban vibe, with various styles made, including simpler three-hand watches and different chronographs.
In 2006, Richemont took over Minerva and turned into a subsidiary of Montblanc. Founded in 1858 in Villeret and gaining significant recognition as a producer of innovative professional chronographs, Minerva still resides there today. The first collection that Minerva produced under the Montblanc name was the Villeret Collection, which resembled the watches that Minerva had produced prior to joining with Montblanc.
The name “Institut Minerva de Recherche en Haute Horlogerie” is what the institute is known as today, with a lot of machinery that was used 100 years ago still being used to this day. A truly unique aspect is the hairsprings that Minerva produces, as very few manufacturers have the capability of crafting this part of a watch themselves, which is the key driver for a watch’s accuracy. Nivarox-FAR S.A., which belongs to the Swatch group, is one of the main producers of the hairspring. As the capacity of production is quite low, Minerva exclusively uses the hairsprings they've crafted for the timepieces created and manufactured in Villeret.
In 2014, Montblanc produced its first watch with a perpetual calendar. The movement inside the dial was a combination of an ETA base movement and a perpetual calendar module by Dubois-Dépraz. The new Bohème watch collection for women was also released that year. As new collections were revealed, Montblanc ensured that they were of the highest standard, with unique watchmaking skills and expertise.
Montblanc created the world's lightest watch on the market, the TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept, which was promoted by their ambassador at the time, Lin Dan, two-time Olympic badminton champion. Weighing only 14.88 grams, the watch had an extremely low weight material for the case called ITR2.
